In macular degeneration, the light-sensing cells in the eye die but the rest of the retina's circuitry survives. The Prima system uses camera glasses and a pocket processor to convert video into near-infrared light, which a 378-pixel implant turns into electrical signals for the retina; the implant also powers itself like a solar cell. Over 80 percent of recipients could read again.

Networks tell each other where to send traffic using the Border Gateway Protocol, a system built on trust, so one wrong announcement can hijack a site, as when Pakistan briefly redirected YouTube in 2008. RPKI fixes that by having address owners publish signed records naming which networks may announce their addresses. The share of protected routes rose from 54 to 70 percent in a year.

ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now look at the tabs you already have open. When you tag Chrome in a prompt, it can compare products across tabs, fill out forms, or draft emails, and the sidebar now brings your full chat history to any page. ChatGPT Work can also control tabs to send messages, fill forms or download files.

Zero-click attacks infect a phone without the owner tapping anything. Citizen Lab found that mercenary hackers bought targeted ads carrying code that reached control servers, which then delivered spyware to selected devices, including 45 phones at the Al Jazeera media network in 2024 and 2025. Google and ad platforms have since removed the vendor involved.

Bluesky's Attie tool started as a way to build custom feeds with AI prompts. It now generates small social apps, such as games, polls and dashboards, each published as its own website with a link and credit for its maker. Bluesky's CEO calls it vibe coding for your community, and a simple poll takes a few minutes to create.

Automated driving systems combine sensors, chips and models that decide when to steer, brake and accelerate. Volvo says it will use Nvidia's Hyperion platform and Alpamayo reasoning software for a Level 2++ system that handles traffic lights, stop signs and unprotected left turns hands-free, planned across its lineup and without lidar before the end of the decade.

Most image generators run in the cloud, but open weights let people run them on their own computer. Black Forest Labs released FLUX 3 Image Klein, a model with 5.6 billion parameters that outputs 4K pictures, edits them at the pixel level and can take up to ten reference pictures. A lower-precision build fits on an 8 GB graphics card, drawing an image in under nine seconds on an RTX 4070.

Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Super VL, an open 120 billion parameter model for enterprise agents that keep working in the background. It is a mixture of experts, so only 12 billion parameters run for each token, and it uses 4-bit compression plus draft-and-check decoding that Nvidia says speeds up text generation. Smaller Bolt versions fit on machines with 24 GB of memory.

A group of researchers built a benchmark of 50 unpublished theoretical physics problems with verifiable answers and tested AI agents on them without hints. GPT-6-Astra, running in OpenAI's Codex environment, solved 49 of 50 at under $3 each, matching specialists. The authors say agents still lack the judgment, or taste, behind real breakthroughs.

Rivian's cars already have an AI assistant, and its CEO says agents built by other companies, such as Anthropic, will come next. The vehicle routes each spoken request through an in-house framework that decides whether a model running on the car or one in the cloud should answer, like a traffic light. Agents cannot brake or steer; those controls stay separate.

Quantum computers make frequent errors, so they need special states, called magic states, to run the gates that give them their power. The usual way to make those states can eat up most of the machine. Google researchers instead encoded one rough magic state on their Willow chip, checked it without destroying it, and grew it across more qubits, cutting errors about 40-fold.

Coordinated universal time is kept by atomic clocks, which are steadier than the Earth's rotation. Officials have added 27 leap seconds since 1972 to keep the two in sync, but a minute with 61 seconds can confuse computers. Delegates from 69 countries voted to replace leap seconds with a leap hour, allowing up to an hour of drift, which is not expected to be needed for thousands of years.

Devices like Amazon's Bee use microphones and AI to record, transcribe and analyze conversations, turning them into notes and to-do lists. Amazon launched the $75 Bee Frontier, an upgraded wearable with better noise filtering and seven days of battery, plus the $100 Bee Eclipse, a card-sized recorder that snaps onto a phone. The devices record whenever they are on.

Its new Specs feature is a markdown editor where teams write down their design language, libraries and guidelines, and the document lives inside Figma where both people and agents can reference it. Figma also says its MCP integration now supports more than 20 new tools.
