Solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte that carries lithium ions with a ceramic or polymer, which should allow faster charging, longer life and less fire risk. The catch is dendrites, needle-like lithium growths that can crack the ceramic and short the cell, plus hard manufacturing. QuantumScape says it can now heat-treat its ceramic electrolyte in minutes instead of days.

Quantum computers need many hardware qubits tied together into one error-corrected logical qubit, and each step up in size should cut mistakes. Quantinuum says its Helios machine, which moves trapped ions around a ring with electric fields so lasers can entangle any pair, cuts some error measures by more than tenfold per step, well beyond the factor of two most demos reach.
